Our goal is to evaluate, train, and prescribe adaptive equipment for people who need to drive their vehicles with special equipment. Many clients do not need equipment. We also help shop for vehicles that best fit our client’s needs. Please do NOT purchase a vehicle until we see you at our initial evaluation so we can better help you shop.
We perform a clinical evaluation of vision, physical abilities, cognition, visual perception, and topographical orientation and then take you behind the wheel for additional evaluation of potential adaptive equipment needs.
Student Drivers, those with Cognitive Impairment, Senior Drivers, Workers' Compensation, and Veterans Affairs may have any of these disabilities or a combination that also requires an adaptive evaluation, training, and prescription for their vehicles.
Spina Bifida – Special vehicle, adaptive seating, adaptive primary controls, and secondary controls, lift, reduced effort steering, chest strap, pedal extensions, backup camera
Amputee – special vehicle, adaptive seating, adaptive primary and secondary controls, adaptive seating, lift, handles, backup camera
Stroke – adaptive primary and secondary controls, lift, adaptive seating, handles, lift, backup camera
Spinal Cord Injury – special vehicle with lift or ramp (high-tech and/or low-tech equipment for primary and secondary controls), reduced effort steering/braking vehicle, chest strap
Muscular Dystrophy – special vehicle with ramp or lift, reduced effort steering/braking, primary and secondary controls, mirrors, chest strap, backup camera
Post-Polio – special vehicle with lift or ramp, primary & secondary controls, reduced effort steering, chest strap, mirrors, backup camera
Cerebral Palsy – special vehicle with lift or ramp, primary and secondary control adaptations, reduced effort steering/braking chest strap, mirrors, backup camera
Multiple Sclerosis – special vehicle with lift or ramp, primary and secondary controls, reduced effort steering/braking, chest strap, mirrors, backup camera
Arthritis -newer vehicle, reduced effort steering or braking, seating adjustments, mirrors, special steering devices, backup camera
Aging – same as arthritis – we also do a certified AAA Car Fit test to make certain the client doesn’t require any special equipment.
Learning Disability /Autism – GPS and adaptive equipment may be required if there are physical disabilities in addition. Additional lessons are always required.
Neuropathy – usually alternate use of primary controls of gas/brake for lower extremities involvement and may require steering aides for upper involvement
Vision Loss – additional mirrors, backup camera, possible referral to biopic driving
Traumatic Brain Injury – GPS, additional lessons, and other adaptive equipment as needed if physical disabilities also present
Here are pictures to demonstrate previous clients and their adaptive devices and also the adaptive devices we currently have on our evaluation vehicles:
Services we offer to new student drivers:
We are able to take our students from start to finish with our driving program. This includes Motor Vehicle Department-approved driving certifications!
Call (602) 840-2323 for more information and to schedule an appointment!
Our evaluation lasts about three hours and consists of a clinical evaluation including vision, visual perception, physical abilities, and cognitive testing. A behind-the-wheel driving evaluation is then performed, including a trial with adaptive equipment that you might need. There is also discussion at this time about the best types of vehicles to be purchased. Please do not purchase a vehicle prior to being evaluated. Let us know if you are getting a new wheelchair. If adaptive equipment is required, we will also consider what adaptive equipment will be best for you.
This varies greatly depending on the person. Normally, it takes about 3 months from start to finish (including evaluation, receiving the permit, completing training, and receiving a driver’s license).
No. Medicare and other insurance companies do not view driving as a medical necessity. However, many of our students are eligible for help with funding through Vocational Rehabilitation. To see if you are eligible for their services, please contact the Vocational Rehabilitation office nearest to you. We require pre-payment at the time of scheduling, typically with a credit card.
If you are a new student driver: The Arizona Motor Vehicle Department requires that students between the ages of 16 and 18 who have their permit must have a minimum of 30 hours of daylight driving training and 10 hours of nighttime driving before they can receive their driver’s license. However, the amount of driving training that we spend with you will depend on how much you need to become a safe and proficient driver. If equipment is involved, it usually takes longer. Normally, this is somewhere between 30 and 50 hours of driving training.
Other driving training, including rehabilitation with or without adapted equipment: This depends on the person, and the driving evaluator will discuss this with you after the initial evaluation.
This depends on the person. We can discuss this when you call us. Please contact our office at (602) 840-2323 to see if this would be an option for you.
Do not practice prior to coming, especially if your license is no longer valid!
Prior to scheduling, fax your physician’s prescription for an “Adapted Driving Evaluation.” We cannot make an appointment until we have the physician’s green light to begin. We also welcome recent therapy reports or notes and a neuropsychological report to better evaluate. You need to bring your Permit if you have one or your Arizona ID. We must see the wheelchair or power chair if you use one, and let us know if you are getting a new chair. We must see the vehicle you drive if you have one, so bring it to the evaluation. Do not purchase one ahead of the evaluation so we can advise you on your purchase!

Our goal is to help people with disabilities on their road to independence! We have been working with Vocational Rehabilitation counselors for the past 15 years to help their clients become self-sufficient and independent.
Vocational Rehabilitation is a program that is offered by the state, and their ultimate goal is successful employment for people with disabilities. They frequently address driving when it is a barrier to someone’s independence. In certain situations, a Vocational Rehabilitation counselor can refer their clients for our services when they qualify. Please talk with your Vocational Rehabilitation counselor to see whether this is a service they can cover for you.
If you would like to see you qualify for Vocational Rehabilitation services, please contact the Vocational Rehabilitation office closest to you.
We offer a variety of services, including driving evaluations, driving and permit training, and vehicle adaptation consultations. We work closely with the vendors who do the installations when adaptive equipment is required. If you have questions about service descriptions and how many hours will be needed, please give our office a call.
The first step is always a driving evaluation. Once we have received authorization from the Vocational Rehabilitation counselor and a physician referral, we will schedule and complete an evaluation. After the evaluation, we will submit our report to the counselor with our recommendations. This is followed by any training and possible vehicle modification process when applicable.
We require an official authorization before we can schedule our evaluation, as well as a physician referral. It is also helpful to have therapy reports, neuropsychological testing results and/or clinical testing results when applicable.
Clients should not purchase a vehicle prior to our evaluation if they do not have one. Also, let us know ASAP if the client is getting a new wheelchair or power chair.

This depends on the driver. For new drivers, this process generally takes about 3 to 6 months from start to finish (including evaluation, receiving the permit, completing training, and receiving a driver’s license). However, this process can take longer for some drivers. Please see our student driver page for more information regarding student drivers.

Many clients come to DriveAble Solutions via workman’s compensation. We have been serving the Arizona Workers Compensation Claims Association (AWCCA) and Rehabilitation Integrated Network Group (RING) members’ clients for 15 years!
Veterans Affairs Clients
DriveAble Solutions has been proudly serving our Veterans for 14 years! We get our orders from the VA.
To get started, If you are a service-connected Veteran and already getting healthcare through the VA, you must contact your physician at the VA to get a driving assessment prescribed by him. We will eventually get that prescription, and then we can start. The VA will tell you whether you are eligible through them for a vehicle conversion or adaptive equipment necessary to drive. We do not make that decision.
Once we hear from the VA that your physician is recommending an evaluation, we will call you immediately and schedule an appointment!
You will need an active Driver’s License to begin the process.
